Invented in 2005, this compact brewer uses light air pressure to produce a smooth, rich cup with clean flavor notes and low acidity - and it's earned cult status among coffee lovers, baristas, and camping enthusiasts alike. It's fast, forgiving, and produces a flavorful cup with almost none of the fuss of other brewing methods.
In this recipe guide, we’ll walk you through the ultimate AeroPress recipe - covering everything from grind size and water temperature to the exact brewing technique - so you can get a cafe-quality cup right at home.
The Classic Recipe
Ratio: 17g coffee to 250g water (adjust to taste)
Grind: Medium-fine, similar to table salt
Water temp: filtered water at around 90°C - 93°C
Steps
- Rinse the filter. Place a paper filter in the cap, rinse with hot water to remove papery taste, and attach the cap to the AeroPress.
- Add coffee. Set the AeroPress on your scale or directly on your mug, and add 17g of freshly ground coffee.
- Bloom. Pour in about 40g of water, just enough to saturate the grounds. Stir gently and let it sit for 30 seconds - this releases trapped CO2 and helps extraction.
- Fill. Pour the remaining water up to the 250g mark. Stir a few times to make sure all grounds are evenly saturated.
- Steep. Insert the plunger just enough to create a seal, and let it steep for 1 minute to 1.5 minutes.
- Press. Press down slowly and steadily over about 20–30 seconds. You should hear a slight hiss at the end - that's your cue to stop.
- Enjoy. Dilute with hot water if you prefer an Americano-style cup, or drink it as is for a bold, espresso-like shot.
Try the Inverted Method. While the standard method works well, coffee enthusiasts love the Inverted Method because it gives you total control over the brew time and extraction without any premature dripping. To try it: flip the AeroPress upside down, add your coffee and water as usual, steep, then carefully flip it right-side up onto your mug or carafe before pressing.
