Affogato: Coffee as Dessert

Hot coffee, cold gelato, ninety seconds. Coffee that doubles as dessert.

Affogato: Coffee as Dessert

Affogato - Italian for "drowned" - is less a recipe than an idea: hot coffee poured directly over cold vanilla gelato or ice cream, so the two collide right at the table. The heat starts melting the ice cream instantly, creating a texture somewhere between a drink and a dessert. It takes ninety seconds and reliably impresses.

Suggested coffee: Harmonia - 50/50 Arabica-Robusta or Lunaria - 30/70 Arabica-Robusta.

You'll need: 1 scoop vanilla gelato or ice cream, 1 shot (or small moka cup, ~ 30–40 ml) of freshly brewed coffee.

  1. Place the scoop of ice cream in a small glass or bowl.
  2. Brew the coffee hot, right before serving.
  3. Pour the hot coffee directly over the ice cream at the table.
  4. Eat immediately, while the two are still fighting each other for temperature.

Next time you can't decide between coffee and dessert, let them fight it out in the same glass!
